President's Message

return to top

Steve Romine, AITP Chapter President

Greetings for the Final Installment of the Year,
This month’s message is going to be short and hopefully sweet.
It has been a year. Not just in AITP, but all across Birmingham. Not just in IT, but in all jobs. In this year, a lot of companies have prospered and a lot have not. A lot of people have done well and furthered their careers and a lot have not. There have been many changes and there are probably many more on the Horizon. But it is not just the Winners and Losers, we also need to consider the survivors.
We, as AITP, have survived. And we will continue to survive. I see that in the Core group of people that keep it alive and active. We will also grow and prosper again. Everything runs in cycles and I feel that we are nearing our upswing. There is a lot of potential sitting on the Board of Directors for this New Year. And I expect that we will see great things. I am excited to have Barbara Shook on-deck as the In-coming President for 2005. Barbara has a sense of urgency about her that will push us back up the growth curve next year.
I also want to say “Thank You” to each of the members of the Board for 2004. I appreciate every one of you and the hard work that you have put into AITP this year. Everyone one has done an outstanding job and you should each pat yourselves on the back. I also have to mention that a lot of the Board for 2004 will be on the Board for 2005, but there have been some changes.
I also want to say “Thank You” to Paul Stewart for all of the work that he has put into AITP over the years, and especially this last. Paul is not leaving us, but he has retired and will no longer serve on the Board. His input and guidance will be missed. Paul helped me tremendously in 2004 and kept me on the straight and narrow when I tended to stray.
And lastly, Thanks to all of you for letting me serve as the President for 2004. I look forward to helping Barbara this next year with her term as President.

AITP Region/Association

The Regional leadership training workshop and Board of Directors meeting was held on Saturday and Sunday October 16/17 in Nashville, Tennessee. Barbara Shook and Maurice Myers were our representatives. I did not attend due to several conflicts that occurred at the last minute. Barbara got some good ideas about chapter leadership and what our Chapter might do to improve in all respects. Along with attending Maurice submitted our chapter to hold the student conference, regional workshop and Board of Directors meeting in Birmingham for 2005. The region voted and Birmingham got the bid. This will be a major undertaking for our chapter and all will be involved in some way. Please let Maurice know what area you would like to volunteer and work. Get involved in some way so we can show the region what Southern Hospitality is all about.
During the meeting the following were elected as our regional officers:
President Julian Wade Atlanta Chapter
Vice President Joe Cobb Tampa Chapter
Treasurer Frank Reagor Nashville Chapter
Secretary Evan Eldridge Individual Member

Let’s support each in year 2005 to keep our region at the top.
In order to stimulate membership growth in region 7, the Regional Membership Committee has approved a membership campaign. The campaign will start November 1, 2004 through August 31, 2005. The winning chapter must have a 10% increase in membership using two decimal places that includes both retaining and new membership. The following will be the awards presented at the regional meeting in 2005.
$400.00 Largest percentage increase in numbers of members
$200.00 Second largest percentage increase in numbers of members
$100.00 Third largest percentage increase in number of members
As of November 9, 2004 our chapter has a membership of 31. As you can figure, we have a lot of work to do on our membership. Let’s all pitch in and become the largest percentage increase in membership.
Don’t forget the collegiate conference in Atlanta in 2005. Universities from all over will be attending. Our chapter needs to support the students making plans to attend and give a helping hand whenever needed. UAB our newest student chapter is making plans to be at this conference and I hope to see others. Again here are the details:

“Ride the Wave of Technology’
When: April 7-9, 2005 Where: Atlanta, Georgia
Hotel: Atlanta Renaissance Waverly Hotel
Hosts: Chattahoochee Technical College Student Chapter and the Atlanta Chapter
Start making your plans to help a student or attending this event. You as a professional will be surprise what you can learn from the conference.

To get up to date with all the current news check the AITP web site. You will never know what you can learn until you try it.  Bring a guest or new member to our November 23th meeting. Let’s get Birmingham Chapter membership in an upward wing.
