"Request for Proposals -- A Case Study"
Paul Stewart
earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of West Alabama
in Business Administration and Computer Science in 1982. Paul began his
career in information technology in 1979 as a computer operator, while
still attending college. After earning his B.S. degree he became a
computer programmer working in both educational and industrial
environments. Returning to the University of West Alabama in 1986, he
became a Data Systems Supervisor as well as an adjunct instructor.
In 1993 he was appointed to Director of Information
Systems for UWA. Paul was elected as the first Chairperson for the UWA
Staff Senate in 1994 and served four years in that position which
included serving on the University Executive Committee. He has also
served as a member of the Dean’s Council and Chairperson of the
Information Technology Committee for many years. Paul recently retired
from UWA and now serves as a consultant on a two-year project to replace
the administrative computing system.
He will talk with us about the process used to select
the vendor for their administrative computing needs by using a detailed
process including a comprehensive Request for Proposal document. |

President's Message |

|

Greetings,
I want to begin this message on a very positive
note. We are welcoming some new members into the organization. We now
have new members from ACCIS and the Southern Company. It is a great thing to
see positive growth within our group. All of these people are a
wonderful addition and I expect to see great things from each of them.
We have finalized membership for our the
Board of Directors and will make the list public at our next
meeting. Please make plans to attend and show your
support for the new Board for 2005.
This has been a fast paced year for all of us
and I don’t expect to see any let up soon. We are winding down 2004 and
trying to wrap up any loose ends and get prepared for the coming year. I
believe that we will see many positive things from the
Board and AITP in 2005.
I want to let everyone know who has hung with the
organization this year, how much I appreciate each of you.
I ask for a little patience and continued positive attitude as we gear
up for next year.
I still have a couple of more months remaining but already
I have made several new acquaintances and good business contacts. I
think each of us can benefit from spending time with one another
sharing our successes and failures and expanding our network further
into the metropolitan Birmingham area. For those of you that have not
been attending regularly, I extend another invitation to come back and
visit with us this month.
We are each responsible for ourselves, our family and
our careers. But it is our friends and business acquaintances that can
help us to be even more successful than we can be alone. AITP is the
perfect place to make that happen. See you there.

Important News from our
Past President Maurice Myers |

Congratulations are in order. I have just returned from the 2004
Regional AITP Conf. in Nashville. Our Chapter #158 won the bid for
hosting the 2005 Regional Conf. and Student Conf. combined. The National
STUCON will be in Atlanta in April 2005. Everyone remembered the great
time they had
in 1993 , the last time we hosted. I know it will be a great benefit to
the Chapter , to our newest student chapter (UAB), and the City of
Birmingham. We have lots of work to do and I am looking for volunteers.
Barbara: Go ahead and let Grady & Neil know we will
need their help. Let the UAB Student chapter (faculty advisors & Student
Chapter Pres.) know that we have a lot to talk about and work out for
the Student Conference portion).
I will start making contacts with Steve Pierson
<National Sales Mgr> Greater B'ham Conventions & Visitors Bureau, and
others. ( not official yet ..but I am in consideration for being named
2005 Region
Committee Chairmen of Education & Programs - (waiting to hear from Joe
Copp 2005 Region VP Elect).
Ted: Thanks for your continued support (you are well
respected in the Region). |

Minutes -- September |

|
September 28, 2004 was called to order by
Steve Romaine at 5:25 p.m. at Macaroni Grill at the Summit, Birmingham,
Alabama. Members present include Steve Romine, Ted Hagler, Maurice
Myers, Charlie Cook, Barbara Shook, and Paul Stewart.
Treasurer’s report was submitted by John Barnhart in
advance. There was a discussion about a $5.00 fee for holding
statements, a $19.25 fee for a safe deposit box to store the statements
and a $15.00 fee for having a balance less than $2,000. Paul Stewart
made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report as submitted. Maurice
Myers seconded the motion and it carried unanimously.
Maurice Myers made a motion to accept the minutes of
the last meeting with one change to indicate a change in meeting
location for the September meeting. Steve Romine seconded the motion and
it carried unanimously.
Charlie Cook announced that 17 reservations were made
for the September meeting. Barbara Shook announced that the UAB student
chapter is doing great and organizing speakers and doing service work.
UAH has shown interest in organizing their chapter. Barbara plans to
visit UAH soon. Ted Hagler discussed the election of national officers
and encouraged everyone vote. Ted has been receiving emails of new
members and those who have not joined. Our membership roster indicates
we have 33 members, 8 of which are not in the state of Alabama. Ted is
looking into those not in Alabama. Ted encouraged us to check the
national website to keep up with what is going on in AITP at the
national level. Paul discussed the need to find speakers for the month
of October and November.
Much discussion took place about the meeting location. A suggestion
was made to check the Hoover Public Library for a possible future
meeting location. Food can be catered into the HPL. It was agreed that
Jim ‘n Nicks will be booked for October and November and a new location
would be established for 2005. A suggestion was made to try and keep the
meeting in Southside which is a convenient area.
Much discussion took place about the Jackson, Mississippi, AITP
meeting that included about 500 participants, 7 or 8 vendors, and 1220
companies.
Much discussion took place about the 2005 Board. It is important to
get the 2005 nominations published before the next meeting to give the
membership a 30 day notice before having the election and installation
in November.
The meeting was adjourned by Steve Romine at 6:00 p.m. |

AITP President, Sam Luke made a statement in the last newsletter that I
would like to quote: “Our membership numbers are still positive and we
hope to do even better before year's end. Our membership committee is
concentrating on efforts to strengthen renewal efforts, and we already
see improvement”. I am happy to see our organization on an upward swing.
Now, our chapter is still not in a positive position. Let’s see if we
can improve our membership both new and renewals. The following have
renewed in the last month and I would like to recognize them so we can
acknowledge each at the next meeting; Michael Cherry, Norma Dodd, Ed
Shockey, and Paul Stewart. Thank You for having faith in the Birmingham
Chapter of AITP.
By the time you receive this newsletter the annual
Student Conference (STUCON 16) will have come and gone. But October
14-16 the AITP Region 7 Student Conference in Nashville will be taking
place and I hope some will attend to represent Alabama. Our newest
student chapter has not had the ample time to organize for this trip.
But, UAB is making plans to attend the collegiate conference in Atlanta
next year. If you or your company would like to sponsor UAB or any of
our student chapters to this event, I know any kind of help will be
appreciated. Being Atlanta is so close; this will give the student
chapters a great opportunity to grow in the IT field. Here are some of
the details:
“Ride the Wave of Technology’
When: April 7-9, 2005
Where: Atlanta, Georgia
Hotel: Atlanta Renaissance Waverly Hotel
Hosts: Chattahoochee Technical College Student Chapter and the Atlanta
Chapter
Start making your plans to help a student or attending this event. You
as a professional will be surprise what you can learn from the
conference.
In conjunction with Stucon 16 October 14-16, the Region 7 leadership
training workshop will be held Saturday and the Board of Directors
meeting will be on Sunday. Your president elect, Barbara Shook and I
will be attending these meetings. Every member is welcome to attend. The
only exception, the RD is the only voice and voting member from a
chapter.
Bring a guest or new member to our October 26th meeting. Let’s get
Birmingham Chapter membership in an upward wing.
