Welcome back from our Summer hiatus!
I know that the summer was not a time of constant
vacations and beach-front villas. Work continues and I know that each of
us were very productive during this time. However, we did as always,
take a summer vacation from AITP.
I hope that we see ourselves just like the kids in
school that progress to the next grade level with opportunities to learn
new things. We find ourselves coming off of our break and I hope that we
have a renewed sense of adventure and drive to take ourselves to new
heights.
We have a couple of issues on the drawing board that we
will be addressing so that we may drive the AITP back to the level that
we had three years ago. One is that Barbara Shook has a great idea for a
fundraising effort we will be talking about. It revolves around a
Dinner/Dance with lots of give-a-ways and entertainment. She has seen
this done successfully at different organizations around the community
and we are looking into utilizing the same opportunity. We will be
asking for everyone’s participation to help make this possible. The
second is that we are going to re-new our drive to meet with the CIO’s
at the major companies in the Birmingham Metro area to look for more
corporate involvement in AITP. We will also be asking them how our
organization can help them. We will also be asking for everyone’s help
in this effort. If only by helping us locate the right people to talk to
in your company.
The last thing that I want to mention is a huge ray of
sunshine in what has been a bleak outlook for our organization. We all
know that our membership is falling off and we have been looking for the
magic bullet that we can use to drive ourselves forward. Amazingly we
now have access to resources that can help us and they are only a short
drive away. The Jackson, MS Chapter of the AITP is doing incredible
things. They are having a Luau in September where they will be flying in
the National President of the AITP, they will have next years incoming
President and they expect 400 – 500 people to attend their function. On
the day of the Luau they will be presenting many speakers and topics
that are pertinent to the current IS environment. And the Governor of MS
will be declaring Sept 21st as “Technology Day” in MS because of the
great things that the Jackson Chapter has been able to do in the State
of MS. I have already been emailing the folks in Jackson so that we can
meet with them and learn from the things that they are doing. They are
doing incredible things and I invite you to check out their homepage by
clicking on www.aitpjackson.org
. We are never too old to learn new things and I am excited by the
possibilities that this presents. We should be able to recreate in
Birmingham what they are doing over there.
Let’s attack this fall with a renewed sense of purpose
and vision for what we can do in the Birmingham Metro. I appreciate each
of you and thank you for your continued support.

280 at I-459 and was called to order at 5:30 pm by Steve Romine,
President.
Members Present: Charlie Cook, Ted Hagler, Steve

Members Absent: John Barnhart, Toni Ellis, Maurice
Myers, and Andrea Simmons.
Minutes: Ted made a motion to accept the minutes from
May 18, 2004 as written. Barbara seconded the motion and it was passed

Since this was a called meeting, regular board reports
were not on the agenda. Steve Romine conducted a survey of those present
and found the following board members willing to serve in 2005: Ted,
Charlie, Barbara, and Steve. Those not present that Steve is aware are
willing to sever in 2005 are Maurice and John. Charlie suggested
including a Student Chapter President on the 2005 board.
Steve led a discussion as to whether we should meeting
in 2005. Barbara encouraged us to support AITP for the benefit of the
new UAB student chapter. Charlie wonders if we can hold meetings in
conjunction with the UAB student chapter. Ted encourages us to hang in
for at least another year. Steve made a motion to continue AITP for 2005
and we should no longer discuss the possibility of folding the chapter
during the remainder of this year. Barbara seconded the motion and it
passed.
An extensive discussion took place as to where to hold
the September meeting. Charlie made a motion to hold the September
meeting and Jim n’ Nick’s Southside. Steve seconded the motion and it
passed. Charlie will book J & N Southside for September, October and
November.
Steve will spearhead an effort to put together
recruiting material and schedule face to face meetings with local CIOs.
Barbara distributed information on the dinner dance.
Much discussion took place. Barbara will gather additional information
on cancellation policies. Barbara and Steve will get together on wording
an email to send to the general membership. An idea was purposed to get
student chapters involved to sell tickets.
Ted Hagler reported a total of 31 members are currently on the roster.
Some were listed from other states. About 23 appear to be
local plus two life time members.
Charlie Cook reported that he has not had any inquiries
in several months.

I
hope each member has had a restful summer and ready to get back into the
swing of things. I would like to see more involvement from each one of
our AITP Chapter members for the rest of 2004. Remember the only way to
receive is driven by how much you put into the organization. During the
last several months, the National Headquarters members have been working
to provide each Chapter with information that will help each of us in
our business and chapters. Have you looked at the AITP web page lately?
If you haven’t, please take a few minutes and see what Headquarters is
providing to us as members. This is one service that we can say that I
am proud to be a member of AITP.
Let me give you some key information and you can get
the detail from the National AITP web pages.
AITP has announced a partnership with FedEx Kinko’s
(formerly Kinko’s) to provide members with a 30% discount on most
services. If you have not received your membership card, visit the AITP
web.
Each Chapter can receive a $5 rebate for new and
renewing members. We have to apply for this rebate and our chapter
officers list has to be up to date at headquarters. Steve applied and we
should be receiving this rebate.
There are chapter reports on the web page and the
officers/board can review the up to date membership as well as student
chapter. The reports are in various formats so whatever system you are
running there is a means of reviewing the reports. Please review your
account to make sure everything is up to date. That is the only way your
chapter can keep up with you.
If you are interested in education events, AITP members
receive a reduced rate to Gartner Events seminars and conferences.
Also AITP members can receive a discount on SkillSoft’s
SmartCertify training library including: IT Training, Business Courses
and IT reference ware from books 24x7. To get full details to these
programs go to the AITP web under vendors.
This is a small list of what you can find and learn
using the AITP web page, take advantage of this service and use it to
better your roll of being a member.
AITP Nominating Committee has submitted the following
for the positions of 2005 AITP officers and directors.
President: Brain Reithel, Ph.D.,
Jackson, Ms Chapter
EVP/President-Elect: Mark Gilfand, Twin City, IL Chapter
Secretary/Treasurer: Teresa Hickerson Oklahoma City, OK Chapter
Western Director: Jim Henry, Anchorage, AK Chapter
Central Director: Rich Barnier, Northern IL, Windy City Chapter
Southern Director: Mark Kleine, Oklahoma City, OK Chapter
Eastern Director: Allan Kotmel, Hudson-Mohawk, NY Chapter
This year voting will be done by electronic election. Please visit
http://www.aitp.org/vote.
This is one time you can make a difference as a member of AITP. Please
take the time to get the information about each candidate and cast your
vote.
Cindy Todd, President of the Jackson, Mississippi
Chapter, has invited our membership to a luau on September 21st. The
governor of Mississippi has proclaimed this event as “Technology Day in
Mississippi”. The event will be honoring Sam Luke, AITP President. Also
joining the event will be Dr. Brain Reithel, 2005 president and several
other members of the Executive Board. This sounds like a big event and
if you are interested in attending, please contact me for more
information.
Barbara Shook has been invited to be the quest speaker
at the UAB Student Chapter meeting on Friday, September 10. She has
accepted and several of the board members will be attending to give
Barbara moral support. At our regular meeting, please take a little time
to thank Barbara for supporting our chapter as well as the students. The
student chapters are our future and we need to support this kind of
event at every chance we have.
This has been a small update on the events that
occurred during our summer break. I hope each one takes the opportunity
to visit the AITP web. Most important make your reservations to the
September meeting and bring a guest.
Hope to see each one at Jim N' Nicks, September 28 for
a little barbecue and informational meeting.
