President's Message

return to top

     I want to start off by thanking Bill and Mike for the excellent presentation on Voice over IP in February. Technology has always amazed me. Especially the thought of learning something new everyday. I’ve heard a lot about this technology and now I understand it a little better. Great job.
     It’s already March guys. This year has taken off like a rocket. I remember when I was a child and the days just seemed to drag. It took forever for summer to arrive and when it did, it lasted forever. Well, we have a lot to do this year and time is approaching fast. Next month is our vendor month. We need all the support we can get to make the Region 7 and student conference the best and most talked about event in AITP. I encourage you to start talking to prospective sponsors now so we’re not rushing at the last minute.
     Thank you for supporting AITP in this year of growth. See you at the meeting.

Minutes from February 15, 2005

The meeting started at 5:30 PM. We discussed making sure the board meeting minutes were in the Bitpro each month. Ted Hagler discussed having all members go to http://www.AITP.org and filling out the Conflict of Interest form. This is done each year. Natalie Nixon found our AITP banner at the Pickwick Hotel, our old meeting location, and will bring it to all the meetings at our new location. She discussed the speakers for the next few months including Deltacom, The Stewart Organization and St. Vincent’s Hospital. Carlos Romano, our speaker from January has agreed to speak at a UAB student chapter meeting .Maurice Myers began by talking about our conference. We would like to use Carlos Romano as one of the presentation speakers. Other ideas were Vendor presentations and Job Fair.
He has contacted Dr. Rivera at UAB and they are willing to help and let us use the school for the student contests. We discussed the Embassy Suites as our location. Catering will be provided by the Embassy Suites and Ruth Cris. He has worked out great deals on the rooms, transportation and hospitality suite. Ted Hagler made a motion to accept The Embassy Suites and Natalie Nixon seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 6:35 PM.

AITP Region/Association

return to top

     Good new for new membership to AITP. New members can join AITP during the month of March for $80, a savings of $40 from the usual new member rate. This is a golden opportunity for our chapter to seek new members and increase our membership. I would like to ask each member to take advantage of this offer and recruit several new members. Also, if a student chapter formed between October 1, 2004 and May 31, 2005, each new student can join for $25 versus the usual $35 membership. This would help the UAB chapter increase their membership. If you know any students at UAB that are not aware of our new student chapter please pass this information.
     Please visit the National AITP web-site each month to get the most current information that AITP has to offer.

“RIDE THE WAVE OF TECHNOLOGY”
     What is this? The 10th Annual AITP National Collegiate Conference will be in Atlanta, Georgia April 7 to April 9, 2005. This will involve the conference, programming contest, banner contest and many other challenges. The conference is a golden opportunity for students to get a real understanding of the computer world. Let's support our Student Chapters that would like to take this challenge. Be sure to ride the wave of technology.

Maurice needs YOUR help!
     The Regional Student Conference and Board meeting will be in Birmingham this year. ‘BRING IT ON HOME’ will be the theme in that Region 7 is the Southern Hospitality Region. The Embassy Suite will be the conference headquarters and is close to UAB campus where the student contests are scheduled. Maurice Myers is the chair for this conference and he is making plans, now, but needs your help. Here is your opportunity to step forward. Call or e-mail him – today. Our Chapter needs your help.
mmyers@amsouth.com 205/581-7711.
     Please try to bring a new member or visitor to our Chapter meeting this month. We as a Chapter need to encourage our workforce to come and find out what AITP is all about.
     Hope to see you at Jim N' Nicks, Tuesday March 22.
