Exciting News --- Brand New - Project
Management Program in the School of Business at UAB
The UAB
Accounting and Information Systems Department and the Project
Management Institute Birmingham chapter will soon begin offering a
new three course Project Management program. The first PM courses
will start Friday, April 21st, and end Saturday, August 5th. Class
meetings will be held on Fridays starting at 1:00 PM and ending at
5:00 PM and include lunch. The next day, classes will meet on
Saturday mornings starting at 9:00 AM and end at 1:00 PM and include
breakfast. The program addresses the “what” and the “why”
perspective of improving the “right” business processes and the
“how” of efficient execution using modern project management
concepts and tools.
The certificate program consists of three courses: one
addressing Business Process Management/Improvement (BPI), one
covering the Project Management Body of Knowledge (the PMBOK), and
one preparing participants for the Project Management Institute’s
Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate examination - a
total of 70 to 80 contact hours.
The Business Process Improvement course requires 28
hours or less. It addresses analyzing and modeling the “as-is”
process, visualizing improvements, and defining and modeling the
“to-be” process. The Project Management Body of Knowledge course
covers the Project Management knowledge areas and process groups in
32 hours. The PMP exam preparation course requires at least 16 hours
and reviews the PMBOK from an exam-taking perspective with
instructors providing pointers for successfully taking and passing
the exam.
The program cost is $4,895 which includes the course
fee, three texts, PMI international and local membership for one
year, the PMP examination fee, parking, lunch, breakfast, and
snacks. If a student does not pass the PMP exam he/she may repeat
the PM courses at the next scheduled offering for no charge. The
classes will be held in the UAB School of Business building on 10th
Avenue South. Permitted parking will be in the lot adjacent to and
west of the School of Business building.
In today’s world of “quicker – better – cheaper” the
effective execution of innovative business process improvement and
IT projects is imperative. The UAB School of Business recognizes the
need for those managing projects to understand business process
management and improvement and to be formally trained and certified
in the Project Management Institute Body of Knowledge.
This program was started based on the requests of many
of our IS Advisory Council members who were spending much more than
the cost of this program sending their employees out of town to
obtain this certification. We truly feel that we have created a
quality in-town program at a very reasonable cost.
We surely hope you will support the program by
encouraging your employees to participate. Funds raised by this
program will be used to support IS program initiatives and student
scholarships. The plan is to offer this program twice a year.
Attached is a Word file with more information on the PM program.
Please note that we are in currently the process of having this
program approved by UAB in order to grant an actual certificate for
participation.
The director of the PM program at UAB is Professor Paul
Crigler. For more details on the program, he can be reached at
pcrigler@uab.edu or by phone at 934-8816. You may also contact Ms.
Tracey White at 934-8820. |

Did you read the
article titled “AITP – Opportunities for Networking and Growth”, written
by AITP Association President, Mark Gilfand, CDP? Networking is one of
the cornerstones of being a member of AITP and is so true to our
organization. Our organization has opportunities in the areas of
education, networking, leadership, as well as many others. If you have
not read this article, I would encourage you to do so.
Information Technology (AITP) National Collegiate
Conference (NCC) event will be March 30-April 1, 2006 in Dallas, Texas.
It is not too late to make plans to attend this conference. The
conference schedule will be informative for students as well as
professional members. More information about this conference can be
found on the AITP website:
http://www.aitp.org./ncc.
A reminder to all Board members, it's time to submit a
new Conflict of Interest Form. Board members can go to http://www.aitp.org/mychapter
, click on the 'AITP Leader Conflict of Interest' link, submit it! It
only takes a couple of seconds.
The reason I have been pushing the article written by
our Association President, our Chapter is beginning to lose in every
respect. Our Board meetings have not been attended as well as our
monthly business meetings. Our membership has fallen down to average
below 20 members. That means we need extra help from the current
membership or we will not survive as a chapter. Please, each one think
about what AITP (DPMA) has meant to you and let’s get the ball rolling
again.
Please try to bring a new member or visitor to our
Chapter meeting this month. We as a Chapter need to encourage our
workforce to come and find out what AITP is all about.
Hope to see you at Jim N' Nicks, Tuesday March 28.
