President's Message |

Hello everyone. Summer’s finally here. I know, we all still have
to work, but I hope you all have a nice vacation planned.
I would like to say ‘ThankYou’ to Maurice Myers and all who came
out to our meeting in April. The meeting was smaller than I had
hoped, but I think it turned out well. I do have some literature if
you are interested.
This is our last meeting of our Spring session. In lue of our
dinner meeting, scheduled for May 23, we will meet at the AITP table
set up at the Tech-Mixer on Thursday, May 18, 2006 at 6:00pm at the
Winfrey Hotel. I have been involved with helping coordinating the
event and it is going to be great. We will have heavy hors d'oeuvres
including meatballs, chicken fingers, veggie trays and fruit. There
will be vendors for you to visit. You will be provided with a card
to have stamped at different vendor tables. When the card is
complete, you can turn that in for drawings to be held at 7:45pm.
Each User group will have a table for displays and applications.
Lastly, they will have a theatre in the middle of the room for each
group to have a speaker discuss the benefits and advantages of the
groups. The best thing is the only charge will be for the cash bar
if anyone is interested. I hope you will all come out and bring your
friends.
See You There,

The meeting was called to order by Barbara Shook at 5:35 p.m. Also
attending were Ted Hagler, Maurice Myers, and Paul Stewart.
Barbara opened the meeting with a discussion of Tech
Birmingham and how we can participate in a meeting scheduled for May
18 where some 20 other technology organizations will be represented.
Maurice discussed how, with 19 active members on the
roster, we cannot close our chapter. Maurice indicated that Tech
Birmingham gets some funding from the City of Birmingham and the
State of Alabama. A discussion of each board member and their area
of responsibilities followed.
Barbara suggested having the May board meeting at lunch
time to make it possible for more board members to attend. Barbara
will check into scheduling the May dinner meeting with Tech
Birmingham on May 18 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Maurice suggested
that we meet “as a group” when attending Tech Birmingham.
Barbara indicated how much she wants to keep AITP
active. The speaker for April is expected to be from the Birmingham
Fire Department or Maurice Myers will be the speaker.
Barbara discussed the desire to continue the annual
donation to a charity that usually occurs in November. We also
discussed the annual scholarship to college students. The board
members thought it would be appropriate to have a scholarship ready
to disburse by the first of the year. A discussion of student
chapters followed. There is a need to make contact with each advisor
of each student chapter.
Ted discussed the May membership drive where there is a
$25 discount off the membership fee. Also, the $15 one time
processing fee has been permanently discontinued.
The meeting was adjourned by Barbara at 6:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted.

AITP Region/Association |

The Association Board of
Directors meeting in Dallas, Texas, voted to eliminate the $15 New
Member fee. With on-line processing and other cost savings, registration
has become more streamlined processing of a new member, eliminating
processing overhead. This is a great time to introduce AITP to new
members. During May, IT professional can join AITP for $80, plus local
dues. Along with the eliminating $15 and discount fee, this is a great
opportunity to invite new members to join our Chapter of AITP. We need
to grow and new members to help us survive our reducing membership
problem. Let’s all of us reach out and get new members during this offer
that the Association has provided.
The AITP National Collegiate Conference in Dallas was a
huge success. The registered attendance of 820 was recorded and
continues to be the single largest event produced by AITP. The
registration in Atlanta was recorded at 792 which this event provides
the students and members a great program to attend with numbers growing
and more opportunities each year.
Planning has already started for the 12th annual AITP
National Collegiate Conference which will be held in downtown Detroit,
Michigan March 29 - 31, 2007 hosted by the Central Michigan University
AITP student chapter and CMU MIS Advisory Council. Plans are being
finalized to hold the event in Memphis in 2008 and bids are being
accepted for 2009 and beyond. Let’s help our student chapters attend
this outstanding event.
Our dinner meeting, scheduled for May 23, will be
different. In the process of find interesting speakers and new ways to
get more members involved, we will meet with other Tech communities
during the TechMixer, May 18 at The Wynfrey Hotel. The TechMixer is a
new event Birmingham Area Technology Leadership Alliance is putting on
supporting all IT groups in this area. This event will have in
attendance many area groups so we can learn more of what Birmingham is
doing in the IT area. Let’s have a great turn out for this event, bring
a friend, Thursday, May 18.
See you at The Wynfrey, Thursday May 18.
